The Hard Truth About Heaven

C9

The Narrow Road to Heaven: What the Bible Really Says

It’s one of the most difficult and heart-wrenching truths to accept: not everyone goes to heaven. In fact, Jesus Himself said, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:13-14).

These aren’t easy words to hear—especially when we’ve lost someone we love. At funerals, people often say things like, “They’re in a better place now,” or “I know they’re smiling down on us from heaven.” But Scripture challenges us to examine the truth, not just the comfort
Our culture has embraced a false sense of security.  The Bible never teaches that everyone goes to heaven. It teaches repentance, faith, obedience, and a relationship with Jesus Christ. Without that relationship, the sad reality is that many are lost—no matter how kind, moral, or decent they seemed in life.
The road to eternal life is narrow—not because God is trying to keep people out—but because few are willing to surrender everything to follow Christ. Many assume that being a “good person,” not killing anyone, or avoiding major sins is enough. But that’s not what saves us. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 2:8-9 that salvation is by grace through faith—not by works, so that no one can boast.

The Deception of Goodness Without Christ

Many believe that being a “good person” is the ticket to heaven. If you’ve never killed anyone, tried to help others, or lived a decent life, surely God will let you in—right? But the Bible tells a different story.
Good deeds, kindness, and morality are admirable—but they don’t erase sin. Isaiah 64:6 tells us, “All our righteous acts are like filthy rags.” We all fall short. That’s why Jesus came—to die for our sins and rise again, offering us new life. It’s not enough to be “better than most”—we must be born again (John 3:3).
The problem isn’t just what we do—it’s who we are. We’re born into a sinful world with a sinful nature. Sin separates us from God, and the penalty for sin is death—eternal separation from Him (Romans 6:23).

What Does It Take to Enter Heaven?

Jesus gave the answer plainly: “You must be born again” (John 3:3). Salvation isn’t earned through good behavior. It comes only by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Repentance – Turning away from sin and turning toward God (Acts 3:19)
Faith in Jesus – Believing that He is the Son of God who died for your sins and rose again (Romans 10:9-10)
Surrender – Making Jesus Lord over your life, not just Savior
Obedience – Not perfection, but a life marked by pursuing God's will and bearing spiritual fruit (Matthew 7:16-21)

Why This Truth Matters Now

This message isn’t about judging others or taking away hope. It’s about giving real hope—the kind that leads to eternal life. If you’re alive and reading this, there’s still time to get right with God. There’s still time to examine your heart and ask the tough questions: Am I truly walking the narrow path? Have I surrendered to Christ? It’s far better to wrestle with these truths now than to face eternal regret later.

A Loving Warning

We can’t assume heaven is everyone’s default destination. Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father” (Matthew 7:21).

This is not meant to crush your spirit but to awaken it.

God wants you in heaven—but on His terms, not yours. He’s not hiding the way. He’s calling you to follow it now.
