The Importance of Forgiveness

C21
Forgiveness is one of the central themes of the Bible. It is not only a command from God but also a reflection of His very nature. Throughout Scripture, we see that forgiveness is essential to our relationship with God and with others. It is through forgiveness that we find freedom, healing, and reconciliation.
Romans 12:19 - Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,” says the Lord.
It’s not always easy to forgive, especially when it’s a life-changing event that leaves a scar on your heart—like losing a loved one to violence. If I’m honest, I know I would probably want to go after that person myself. The anger you feel inside can be overwhelming, but if you act on those thoughts, you could end up in prison for life. And if you have a family, that would mean leaving them behind.

You might be able to forgive, but forgetting is a whole different struggle. The memories creep back, and sometimes you just wish it had never happened.

But here’s something we can’t forget—Jesus went to the cross and died to forgive every one of our sins, no matter how deep, no matter how dark. That’s not easy to fully grasp, but it’s the truth. Without His sacrifice, every one of us would be headed for Hell.
Forgiveness doesn’t mean the person you forgave automatically has a ticket to Heaven—that part is between them and God. They must ask for forgivness and except Christ and live a Christ-like life. It must be a true repentance and a life time commitment to Christ. If it is a false repentance Jesus will know.

1. God’s Example of Forgiveness

The Bible teaches that God is merciful and ready to forgive. Psalm 103:12 declares, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” His forgiveness is complete and unconditional, made possible through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. When we accept Christ, our sins are washed away, and we are reconciled to God (Colossians 1:13-14).

2. Forgiveness as a Command

Jesus emphasized forgiveness in His teachings. In the Lord’s Prayer, He instructed us to pray, ,“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins” (Matthew 6:14-15). Immediately after teaching this prayer, Jesus added, “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you” (Matthew 6:14). Forgiving others is not optional—it is a direct command tied to our own experience of God’s forgiveness.

3. Forgiveness Breaks the Chains of Bitterness

Unforgiveness leads to bitterness, anger, and spiritual bondage. Hebrews 12:15 warns us not to let “a root of bitterness spring up” because it causes trouble and defiles many. When we forgive, we release ourselves from the weight of resentment and allow the peace of Christ to guard our hearts (Philippians 4:7). Forgiveness is not about excusing sin but about freeing ourselves from its ongoing power.

4. Forgiveness Reflects Christ’s Love

Jesus demonstrated ultimate forgiveness on the cross when He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). As His followers, we are called to imitate His example. Ephesians 4:32 reminds us, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” By forgiving others, we display Christ’s love and become a witness of His grace.

5. Forgiveness Brings Reconciliation

Forgiveness paves the way for reconciliation in relationships. While reconciliation may not always be possible or safe in every situation, the heart of forgiveness opens the door for peace and restoration. Romans 12:18 instructs us, “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” Forgiveness allows us to release the offense and seek peace, even when full restoration is not achievable.

Conclusion

Forgiveness is at the very heart of the Christian life. God forgives us through Christ, and we are called to forgive others in return. Forgiveness heals wounds, restores relationships, and reflects the love of Jesus to the world. By choosing forgiveness, we walk in obedience to God and experience the true freedom and peace that only He can give.
