Why does god allow suffering?

Free Will: God has given humans free will, and this freedom allows people to make choices that can lead to suffering, either for themselves or others. God does not always intervene because He respects the free will He granted to humanity. For example, Deuteronomy 30:19 says, “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” Humans' choices are a major factor in the suffering present in the world.

The Fallen World: According to Christian teachings, sin entered the world through Adam and Eve's disobedience in the Garden of Eden, as described in Genesis 3. This sin brought with it suffering, death, and decay, which continue to affect creation today. Romans 8:22 says, “We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.”

Testing of Faith: Suffering can also be seen as a test of faith, a way for believers to grow in perseverance and trust in God. James 1:2-4 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

God’s Greater Plan: The Bible suggests that sometimes God's purpose for allowing suffering is beyond human understanding, but it serves a greater good in His divine plan. In Isaiah 55:8-9, God declares, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways... As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Suffering may be used to accomplish something that humans cannot yet see or understand.

Evil and Satan: Another reason for suffering is Satan's influence on the world. Satan seeks to bring destruction and harm, as shown in Job's story. In Job 1-2, God allows Satan to test Job through immense suffering, but it ultimately leads to greater faith and restoration.

Redemption through Suffering: The Bible also teaches that Jesus Christ himself suffered immensely to bring about humanity’s redemption. Through His suffering and sacrifice, He provided a path to salvation and reconciliation with God (Isaiah 53, Hebrews 2:10). Believers are reminded that their suffering is temporary and that, in the end, God will wipe away every tear and remove all suffering (Revelation 21:4).

In summary, while suffering exists, the Bible offers several explanations, including free will, the fallen nature of the world, testing of faith, and the idea that God’s ways are beyond human understanding. Suffering is temporary and will one day be eliminated when God’s kingdom is fully realized.
