How to Draw Closer to God for a Happier Life

B12
Introduction
I want to share five practical ways that have helped me grow closer to God and experience a more joyful life. These steps can guide you, too, if you are ready to deepen your relationship with Him.
1. Prioritize God Over Material Things
Focusing on wealth, fame, or possessions can pull us away from God. While it's natural to have goals, God should come first. Matthew 6:33 (NIV) says, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” When I stop chasing success or recognition and instead use my gifts to honor God—through writing or other talents—I feel closer to Him. Reading the Bible and reflecting on His Word daily helps me maintain this focus.
2. Maintain a Consistent Prayer Life
Prayer is a vital connection with God. Psalm 145:18 (NIV) reminds us, “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” Consistent prayer strengthens our closeness to Him. I follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, reflect on Scripture, and let what I learn guide my prayers. When I pray faithfully, I feel His presence more intimately.
3. Surround Yourself with Like-Minded Believers
Being around Christians who seek God strengthens your faith. Proverbs 13:20 (NIV) says, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” Christian retreats and fellowship with devoted believers have helped me feel God’s presence more deeply. Focus your energy on relationships that encourage spiritual growth, while praying for those who are not yet seeking God.
4. Keep God in Your Thoughts
Constantly meditating on God strengthens your connection to Him. Psalm 119:15 (NIV) says, “I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.” I take time each day to reflect on His teachings, listen to His guidance, and obey His Word. The more we center our thoughts on God, the closer and happier we become in His presence.
5. Show Love to Others
Loving others is a direct reflection of loving God. Galatians 5:14 (NIV) reminds us, “For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Helping, sharing, and spreading God’s Word through your gifts connects you to both God and those around you. I find my greatest joy when I serve others and show compassion daily.
Conclusion
To grow closer to God and experience a happier life, practice these five habits: prioritize Him over material things, pray consistently, spend time with like-minded believers, keep Him in your thoughts, and love others. By integrating these practices into your life, you can deepen your relationship with God and inspire others through your example.
