The Parable of the Lamp on a Stand
In Mark 4:21-23, Jesus tells the Parable of the Lamp on a Stand. The lamp represents the message of hope found in Christ. Those who have placed their faith in Jesus carry a light intended to be shared with the world, not hidden away for themselves.
“Is a lamp brought in to be hidden under a basket or a bed? No! It is placed on a lampstand to give light to everyone in the house. For everything that is hidden will be revealed, and all secrets will come to light. Anyone with ears to hear should pay attention and understand,” (Mark 4:21-23).
In ancient homes, an oil lamp provided necessary light. To be effective, the lamp had to be positioned on a stand, allowing its light to illuminate the room. Jesus uses this example to teach that the message of Christianity must be actively shared. Followers of Christ are called to let their faith be seen through both words and actions, allowing the light of God’s love to impact others.
